The Naturaliste Friesian School Art Award is an acquisitive award which offers a unique opportunity to showcase the talent and creativity of school age children living in the Cape Naturaliste region.
This art award recognises and celebrates emerging artistic talent from schools located within the Capes region and is a fantastic opportunity for kindy to year 12 students to explore their artistic potential, challenge themselves and elevate their passion for art.
The premise is very simple. Students are invited to submit one artwork in the mediums of drawing, painting, printmaking or sculpture of any or all of the Naturaliste Friesians.
We don’t mind what painting style you use or art movement you follow. From realism to abstract, painterly, impressionism, expressionism and fauvism and abstraction, as long as you use mediums of durable composition and properties, you qualify to enter.
There is no entrance fee.
To get you familiar with your subject matter, we invite you to attend a number of drawing workshops where you meet the DunsBros and the Leeuwins, interact with them, watch them perform, feed them snacks (or else they’re just not performing) and get to know them.
As you’re probably already aware, the Naturaliste Friesians are often in around the town of Dunsborough, or training on the horse beach at Anniebrook, so you are very welcome to take photos of them to help with developing your art piece.
Finalists and their works are professionally exhibited at the Naturaliste Sanctuary during the judging process.
The Naturaliste Sanctuary is proud to support this award which showcases the young artists of the Naturaliste region to watch in the future.

The DunsBros are three gorgeous and hilarious stallions who, along with all their friends, live and love their lives at the Naturaliste Sanctuary. Baudin, Freycinet and Hamelin, our gorgeous glossy gentlemen, are exemplars of evidence-based training principles and perform amazing feats at liberty, completely free of restraint.
There’s also Leeuwin and her sisters, Leschenault, Dordrecht and Eendracht, who are witty, graceful and very brilliant horses. Their high-stepping elegance is perfectly suited to the role of carriage horses which showcases the jewels of their pas-de-deux splendour.
We’d like you to capture the essence of the Friesian horse, a gentle, honest, sober, high-mettled and clever breed; harmoniously built and properly proportioned. Their noble heads have clear, intelligent eyes and small, alert ears with the tips pointing slightly toward each other.
Their neck is of adequate length and is lightly arched. A strong back joins a croup of good length, which doesn’t slope too steeply. The shoulder is strong, long and sloping and the body has good depth and well sprung ribs. The feet and legs are strong with a well-developed forearm and proper stance.
These gorgeous horses have fluid, elegant and suspended gaits, which are emphasized by feathering on the lower legs, a fine mane and beautiful, long tail. Jet black is the preferred colour with no white markings anywhere on the body.
This is a horse of luxurious and proud appearance, full of personality, honest and eager to work.
