Help Baudin, Freycinet, Hamelin and Leeuwin celebrate the important role the Capes Naturaliste and Leeuwin played in WA’s history!
Cape Naturaliste, the northernmost point of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, has a rich history, starting with the Wardandi Aboriginal people who called it Kwirreejeenungup, meaning “the place with the beautiful view”. In 1801. French explorer Nicolas Baudin stopped at the cape during his exploration of Australia, mapping the coast of New Holland. He named Geographe Bay after his flagship, Géographe, and later, the cape was named after his second ship, Naturaliste, captained by Jacques Hamelin.
We celebrate WA’s numerous achievements, including a thriving economy, unique biodiversity and its fascinating history.
