Naturaliste Habitat Corridor Mural Art Prize

The board of the Naturaliste Sanctuary invite West Australian artists to submit works in competition for the Naturaliste Habitat Corridor Mural Art Prize.

A truly unique mural art competition held at the Naturaliste Sanctuary with a first prize of $12,500.

Background

The Naturaliste Habitat Corridor Mural Art Prize is an acquisitive award designed to offer a unique opportunity to showcase your talent and creativity and is open to Western Australian visual artists of all ages and backgrounds.

If you are an artist residing within Western Australia and would like to create a mural to promote the rehabilitation of the Naturaliste Habitat Corridor then submit your design for a chance to win a first prize of $12,500.

Artists with a great visual idea for a building mural which depicts the many environmental and ecological aspects of the Habitat Corridor are invited to enter.

The mural will be a testament to the rejuvenation of endangered areas in Regional Australia and transcends the boundaries of art, becoming a robust engine that drives tourist interest and promotes rehabilitation efforts in the area.

We don’t mind what painting style you use or art movement you follow. From realism to abstract, painterly, impressionism, expressionism and fauvism and abstraction, as long as you use mediums of durable composition and properties and cover the mural format size of 20 m x 6 m, you qualify for entry.

By submitting a design, image, sketch or photograph that brings to life either our mission to rehabilitate the Corridor or an imagining of what it may look like once rehabilitated we can make an initial assessment of your design.

About the Habitat Corridor

The Naturaliste Habitat Corridor is a degraded riparian area which flows across the Naturaliste Estate and into Station Gully Drain (Anniebrook Creek) which then drains into the historically and ecologically important Toby Inlet at Anniebrook, WA.

The Habitat Corridor Rehabilitation Project seeks to restore the vital natural stream, provide habitat for rare and endangered native flora and fauna and improve the water quality flowing into Station Gully Drain.

Erosion, salinisation, compaction, acidification, over clearing and overgrazing have caused substantial water problems within the stream and soil, food and nutrition problems in the paddocks surrounding the Corridor.

The Naturaliste Habitat Corridor Rehabilitation Project (NHCRP) seeks to restore the natural stream which flows though the Naturaliste Estate, improve the water quality flowing into Station Gully Drain and create a wildlife corridor for the estimated 25 species of indigenous fauna once abundant in the stream.

The Work

Must be a mural project and must be either painted directly onto the location or fixed directly to the wall as part of an architectural and/or decorative scheme.
May be in oil, acrylic or mixed media, but must be durable and long-lasting.
May be a multi-panel work as long as the overall dimensions are within the size limits and must NOT exceed the size limit of 120 square metres for the entire work of art with maximum dimensions of 20 x 6 m.
Must be submitted for initial consideration in the form of a colour scale design in any media which must be greater than 20 x 6 cm and accompanied by a photograph or mock-up of the in-situ mural site.

How the entry process works

Entry forms MUST be submitted online. No forms posted or emailed.
You can upload as many images of the mural mockup as you like but anything over 20 images will have to be emailed.
Please make sure your include a full description of your vision for the piece. We anticipate the winning mural to be more than a visual spectacle; it represents a dynamic force of transformation and rejuvenation. In its majestic strokes and grandeur lie the seeds of renewal for both the Habitat Corridor and other riparian areas of the district.

Conditions

Important: It’s essential that you read ALL the instructions and conditions before filling out the entry form. To be considered for selection, the artist must comply with all entry instructions and conditions.

The prize encompasses any one-dimensional artwork submissions that follow an annual thematic concept and includes a monetary gift and significant exposure for the artists and their works.
Exhibitions for the prize are held at the Naturaliste Sanctuary, Anniebrook and can be viewed at Harvest Days.
Following the submission deadline, all submissions will be evaluated by a panel of Naturaliste Sanctuary board members under advice from leading Western Australian artists and academics.
From all entries received, 8 applicants will be asked to present their vision in person (or on Teams). The 8 top-rated entries will be contacted with further information.
Entry forms MUST be submitted online (no forms posted or emailed) and images of previous work should be submitted at the same time.
Materials used must be durable and non-toxic.

Selection of works

The finalists and winner for the Naturaliste Habitat Corridor Mural Art Prize i are judged by an artist selected by the board of the Naturaliste Group.
The prizes are acquisitive (i.e. the work automatically becomes the property of the Naturaliste Group).
The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence shall be entered into.
Finalists and prize winners will be announced to the media and published on the Sanctuary website at approximately 12 noon on the same day: see Key Dates above. The applicants will be advised beforehand.
An artist whose work is selected for display will be asked to provide additional information (such as biographical details and a statement about the work) to assist with preparation of prize-related material.

Licensing works and moral rights

As a condition of entry to the Sanctuary, the artist grants to the Naturaliste Group and all its entities a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable, perpetual licence to reproduce, publish and communicate the selected work via any medium in existence now or in the future for the following range of purposes:
- administering the annual Habitat prize,
- general marketing and promotion of the prize, the exhibition and any exhibitions,
- general promotion of the Sanctuary and its objectives (including fundraising and sponsorship),
- archival purposes,
- reporting purposes,
- inclusion in a catalogue for any future Habitat prizes, and
- educational and research purposes, including making digital versions of future catalogues or other commercial publications featuring the work available to the public in the future.
Any additional commercial use of the selected work will be subject to a separate commercial agreement.
The Sanctuary will attribute the artist when exhibiting, reproducing or publishing the work or communicating the work to the public, unless it is reasonable in all the circumstances not to do so, or the artist has consented in writing, and the Sanctuary will use its reasonable endeavours to ensure that sponsors do the same.
The artist consents to the display of the work, including in relation to any other work in relation to the exhibition, tour and the prize.
The Sanctuary will generally reproduce the work in full. However, details of the work may be used under the licence above at the Sanctuary’s discretion, and the artist consents to any such use. The Sanctuary will not make other material changes to the work without the prior written consent of the artist, unless it is reasonable in all the circumstances to do so, and will use its reasonable endeavours to ensure that sponsors do the same.
