Designed to be a social place, where men can work on interesting projects, build skills and share knowledge, the Shed welcomes men over the age of 18 from any background and with different skill sets.

Naturaliste Shed at Anniebrook

The Naturaliste Shed at Anniebrook attracts members from all over the Cape Naturaliste and Margaret River areas. The region is blessed with a plethora of men with amazing backgrounds and fantastic skills – engineering, architecture and design, building, planning and administration, carpentry, bricklaying, electrical wiring, plumbing and general handyman skills.

We run an interesting and diverse range of projects from creating prototypes for merchandise lines to sell to raise funds to designing and constructing Habitat Corridor infrastructure to solving Harvest Day engineering problems to constructing nesting boxes for endangered birdlife and fauna.

All our projects contribute to and support fundraising and horse rescue efforts.

The Shed is well run and organised. There’s a project committee which reviews, costs and approves all proposed projects and a safety committee to ensure compliance with the OHS manual to keep the Shed safe and efficient.

The Shed itself is brick and tile, well ventilated, fully lined and insulated, with fans for summer and heating in the winter. There’s also an excellent standard of handyman equipment and protective gear and, importantly, comfy sofas, tea, coffee machines and quite often a great morning tea!

Most importantly, the Shed welcomes all men over the age of 18 from any background and with different skill sets.

The Naturalise Shed is a member of the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA).

Location and cost

Location: Gate 3 Chain Avenue, ANNIEBROOK WA 6280
Shed: Located at the western end of the dressage pavilion, next to the DunsBros Arena.
When: Monday to Friday 10 am to 4 pm.
Cost: At this stage, nothing, we can manage insurance and maintenance costs from the sale of merchandise. If that changes, we’ll let you know.
Equipment: A good range of quality stainless steel benches, workbenches, power tools and handyman tools is provided. We supply all the tools and hardware necessary to complete our projects.
Amenities: A kitchenette, bathroom and fridge, basic crockery and cutlery, tea, Nescafé machine, milk. We also supply a good morning tea at 11 am Monday to Friday.
Safety equipment: We supply some safety equipment such as safety glasses, ear muffs and machining gloves. All “shedders” are required to come to the Shed dressed in suitable clothing which complies with our safety guidelines.
Projects: We run a diverse range of projects all of which contribute to or support our horse rescue endeavours. All projects are approved by the Shed committee before commencement.
Conditions: We have an induction manual which must be read and agreed to before joining the Shed. Sorry, but insurance makes us!

Projects

To provide infrastructure for Harvest Days (our main fundraising event), establish the Habitat Corridor and develop merchandise prototypes for sale in the Naturaliste Shop, we’ve created a list of projects to be undertaken by the Naturaliste Shed.

Here’s a sample of the ideas so far:

Harvest Day DunsBros arena – plinths, 3 tier award stand, multi-tier jumps and an equipment trolley, flag poles (design and build).
Habitat Corridor – anti-vermin fence sections (design), duckboard sections (design), observation tower (design and build), livestock bridge (design), marron pond (design), suburb markers (design and build), cockatoo and possum nesting box (design and prototype build).
Habitat Corridor hayrides – hay ride carriage (design and build of the chassis, not rolling stock).
Naturaliste Shop – front sales desk (design and build).
Harvest Day chook feeding paddock – low picket fencing and ground inserts (design and build).
Harvest Day Cream Tea Pavilion – fold-up group dining tables for the breezeway and demountable food service tables (design and build).

As you can see, we have a great mix of simple, high-bang-for-the-bucks projects combined with longer-term, sophisticated design and build projects, all of which directly support our fundraising efforts and contribute to the charity’s objectives and aims.
